AVITECH designed and implemented special hardware and software systems for the “Alexandru Ioan Cuza” University of Iaşi. These are based on assistive technology. Their implementation is part of the CESPeT Project (Special Education Requirements for All), which is meant to guarantee access to educational projects for people with physical and sensory impairment.
AVITECH ensured the equipping of 8 centers, which are: The Educational Training Centre for Immersive Technologies, and The Educational Training and Support Materials Editing Center, both in Iaşi, and six regional Educational Training Centers located in Baia Mare, Târgu-Mureş, Botoşani, Iaşi, Vaslui, and Brăila.
A major element in this project is the simulation system integrated in The Educational Training Center for Immersive Technologies. The system allows creating a projection room in which users are completely surrounded by 3D virtual images and sound. The purpose of this solution is the performance of behavioral studies by the Faculty of Psychology and Education Science of U.A.I.C.
Also, in The Educational Training and Support Materials Editing Center in Iaşi numerous special systems and applications were integrated for the impaired persons: applications for converting the electronic text consisting of Latin characters into Braille symbols; printer for relief printing in Braille; scanner for the literature printed in Braille and convertor for electronic Braille typing; various assistive accessories (joysticks, trackballs, touch sensitive keyboards for “reading” the electronic Braille symbols); mobile recorder for making and playing audio CDs; video conferencing system for video communication with all the other 6 centers.
AVITECH implemented in all centers: a PC network for trainers and students, touch screen displays, applications for text vocal synthesizer, interactive presentation system, activity management applications for teachers, sound systems, special keyboards for blinds, and communication infrastructure.
Set up in 1860, the Alexandru Ioan Cuza University of Iaşi is the oldest university institution in Romania. The University is highly appreciated nationally and internationally, and collaborates with a number of universities abroad. The CESPeT (Special Education Requirements for All) project is due to be performed between August 1st and July 31st, 2013 by the “Alexandru Ioan Cuza” University of Iaşi in partnership with VIA University College of Denmark and with the Education Inspectorates of the respective counties where the 8 centers are located. The CESPeT aims to support the CES students so that they rich a high level of development in what social relationships are concerned, by gaining the necessary experience in school, and in their social and family environment.
