Inert gas fire extinguishing systems are an effective solution for fire protection in spaces where electronic, electrical, or IT equipment is present, ensuring uninterrupted operation of a company or institution. The principle of operation of inert gas extinguishing systems is based on reducing the oxygen level, thereby stopping the combustion process without affecting equipment or human health.
The main inert gases used as extinguishing agents are: IG 100 (Nitrogen), IG 541 (Inergen, containing Nitrogen, Argon, and Carbon Dioxide), IG 01 (Argon), and IG 55 (containing Nitrogen and Argon). These natural gases are present in the atmosphere, are colorless, and do not conduct electricity. In the event of a fire, inert gases do not decompose into toxic elements and do not pose a threat to human health.
The most important benefits of using inert gas extinguishing systems are:
- Rapid extinguishing process;
- Non-toxic nature of the gases to people;
- No residues left after discharge and no need to clean the affected area;
- Environmental and personnel protection. Additionally, during discharge, inert gases generate a smaller thermal shock than other clean extinguishing agents; the temperature does not drop abruptly in the protected area;
- Extremely low cost of recharging inert gas cylinders. The recharging process is very quick;
- Visibility in the room during the discharge of extinguishing agents.
Inert gas extinguishing systems are primarily used for fire protection in data centers, server rooms, technical rooms, for the protection of server racks, data storage systems, and for the protection of electrical and automation panels.
The use of inert gas extinguishing systems is a proactive strategy for fire protection, combining safety, efficiency, and environmental protection, making them an ideal choice.
Wagner Inert Gas Extinguishing Solutions
AVITECH's fire protection solutions are provided through the group's specialized company, DEFLAMMO Fire Protection, Wagner representative for Romania.
Founded in 1976, the German company Wagner is one of the most innovative manufacturers of fire protection systems in the European market and among the first providers of gas extinguishing systems.
For fire protection in technical rooms, Wagner proposes the FirExting extinguishing system, which operates on the principle of suppressing the fire by displacing oxygen from the surrounding air when inert gases are discharged, or depriving the fire of thermal energy when the Novec chemical extinguishing agent is discharged.
In the event of a fire, Wagner's protection systems achieve very early detection through the Titanus high-sensitivity aspiration system (1). It periodically analyzes air samples from the room. The detection system is complemented by the presence of smoke sensors (3). Part of the fire protection system is also the acoustic and visual alarm system (5). Outside the room, there are installed inert gas cylinders (8), the detection and extinguishing control panel (7), and the manual discharge button (6). The gas discharge is done through special nozzles (4).
Specific to Wagner's FirExting inert gas extinguishing systems, in technical rooms housing hard disk storage equipment and other IT&C equipment with components that may vibrate, FirExting SILENT suppressors (2) will be installed to reduce the noise pressure caused by the gas discharge. This solution is VdS-approved for preventing data loss due to hard disk failures caused by excessive noise.
Comprehensive Services, Turnkey Projects
For fire protection solutions, AVITECH [DEFLAMMO Fire Protection] offers a complete range of services: Consulting and Design, IGSU Authorization, Equipment Procurement, Installation Works Execution, Maintenance and Technical Support.
Our company can design and install fire protection systems that comply with both internal IGSU regulations and FM or VdS standards.
A special focus is given to the process of integrating fire detection systems with other building systems and installations: Video Surveillance, Access Control, Integrated Security Systems (PSIM), Voice Alarm, BMS.
FAQs
Inert gas extinguishing systems offer advantages such as rapid extinguishing process, non-toxic nature of gases to people, absence of residues, low recharging costs, and a smaller drop in temperature in the protected area. These characteristics make them ideal for protecting electronic and IT equipment.
These systems are recommended in environments such as data centers, server rooms, technical rooms, and for the protection of server racks and electrical panels, due to their non-impact on sensitive equipment and the absence of residues that require cleaning.
FirExting SILENT suppressors are used to reduce the noise pressure caused by the gas discharge, thus protecting IT&C equipment that may be sensitive to vibrations and sounds. They are VdS-approved for preventing data loss caused by hard disk failures due to excessive noise.
